Michaelangel was in his home; an home very poor, dark and with a bed at angle, and smal table on other angle, a small high window, a small light which penetrated and lighted partially the room; a painting was exhibited on the easel, a small Baccus with a glass on the hand; suddenly campain ringed, and Michaelangel had jump, and approached to other window and asked who is: "Who is who want me, if this call is for me"; a man below rise face and answered: " Are you master Michaelangel painter? Or not?"; Michaelangel therefore answer: "Yes I am Michaelangel, and who are you?, I not wait nobody, are you perhaps police?"; lord seen Michaelangel and answered: "No! I am delegated from Contarelli family, and I must talk with you around a progect, and you are better painter now in Rome"; answered lord know well that so he would pressed pride of Michaelangel; therefore he went down and opened door, therefore lord went in and Michaelangel accompanied him to rise. Lord went in at home Michaelangel’s and seated, therefore began speak with Michaelangel: "I am delegated by Contarelli family for a commission of three painting, and we must make contract. Michaelangel went in tavern little distant, he opened door and a light penetred in the room and five customer in the tavern turn towards Michaelangel, and he seen his friend and indicated him, his friend rise look and answered to indicating, and his friend talked: "Michaelangel, come here my friend, I want offer you an glass of wine"; asked what he is doing at time, Michaelangel answer that he has a commission by Contarelli family, and from little time he has signs contract, and he have already ideas for composition.While went back to home Michaelangel though again his composition, and though his waves and window his room, and light which went in, went beack his home and he began painting.

Michelangelo era nella sua stanza; una stanza veramente povera, buia con un letto in un angolo ed un piccolo tavolo in un secondo angolo, una minuta finestra in alto da cui penetrava la luce parziale; un dipinto era esposto su di un cavalletto, un piccolo Bacco con un bicchiere in mano; all’improvviso suonò la campanella, e Michelangelo ebbe un sobbalzo, e si avvicinò alla finestra maggiore e chiese: "Chi mi vuole? Se questa chiamata è per me, io non aspetto nessuno, forse siete il bargello?"; un uomo sotto alzò la testa e rispose: "No! Io sono un delegato della famiglia Contarelli, e devo parlare con voi per una commissione, e voi siete il miglior pittore di Roma"; rispose così il signore sollecitando l’orgoglio di Michelangelo; quindi lui andò giù per aprire la porta, il rappresentante accedette e sedette, quindi cominciò a parlare con Michelangelo: "Sono stato delegato dalla famiglia Contarelli per una commissione di tre opere e dobbiamo stendere il contratto. Il rappresentante, il cui nome era Pietro Paolo Crescenzi, mostrò il contratto con la data 23 luglio 1599, Michelangelo lesse il documento ed aggiunse la sua firma, con la postilla: "Michelangelo pittore per dipingere due quadri ecc." Pietro Paolo Crescenzi allora decise che l’incontro era finito, rilesse ancora il contratto, piegò il contratto e salutò Michelangelo. Michelangelo restò nella stanza, e si guardò intorno e pensò quale composizione poteva adottare; quindi cominciò a pensare seriamente al martirio di San Matteo, uscì di casa e percorse qualche strada di Roma, cominciò a studiare qualche espressione; due fanciulli che giocavano con una palla, uno dei quali era particolarmente eccitato e partecipe, Michelangelo vide la palla che rimbalzava sui muri e il fanciullo urlava, Michelangelo chiamò il fanciullo e gli fece ripetere quell’espressione; il fanciullo sembrava disturbato dalla richiesta, ed era alquanto sospettoso; intanto Michelangelo vide anche un giovane alquanto robusto a breve distanza, che teneva un capro per il pelo con la sola mano sinistra e con la destra teneva un coltello, questo giovane era anche nudo per metà, e infine Michelangelo si fermò davanti ad uno specchio esposto esternamente in un piccolo negozio, e vide il suo volto. Michelangelo quindi entrò in una taverna, aprì la porta e la luce penetrò nella stanza e cinque convivianti che erano nella taverna si girarono e guardarono Michelangelo, lui vide un suo collega e amico e lo indicò e l’amico disse: "Michelangelo vieni a sederti, ti offro un bicchiere di vino"; chiese cosa stesse facendo in quel momento, Michelangelo rispose che aveva una commissione dalla famiglia Contarelli e da poco aveva firmato il contratto, e aveva già qualche idea per la composizione. Mentre lui tornava a casa pensò ancora alla composizione ai suoi gesti e alla finestra da cui veniva la luce, torno in casa sua e cominciò a dipingere.
