Morte di un romano

Nel Senato Romano la situazione era davvero incerta, chi discorreva con viva voce perché Roma stipulasse la pace con Cartagine chi, invece, voleva la fine della guerra e la distruzione di Cartagine, chi temporeggiava cercando di nascondere l’indecisione simulando prudenza; ma per un momento ognuno tacque ed ascoltò le parole di un soldato che, acceduto nel Senato, chiese attenzione e silenzio: Senatori, padri di Roma, Marco Attilio Regole è tornato da Cartagine, ora è stato avvistato su Tevere, ha attraccato all’Isola tiberina e giunge qui, quindi cerchiamo di ascoltarlo; il soldato non ebbe il tempo di terminare il suo annuncio che i senatori si alzarono dagli stalli lignei e porsero il saluto ad un soldato e scortato da dieci uomini armati, ai quali lui con un gesto ordinò di fermarsi; raggiunse il centro dell’aula e toltosi l’elmo lo poggiò su di uno stallo di marmo, guardò attentamente intorno e scrutò gli occhi di ogni singolo senatore, uno sguardo fermo e risoluto, poi estrasse il gladio e porse romanamente il saluto ai senatori dicendo: Gloria eterna a te Senato di Roma; quindi rinfoderò il gladio e attese che i senatori gli parlassero; uno di loro chiese dagli stalli più alti: Regolo noi già discutevamo degli onori da conferirti per la tua morte, quindi con grande piacere noi adesso ti rivediamo e possiamo salvarti, la tua scorta è davvero modesta, noi possiamo liberarti e quindi tu stesso potrai guidare le legioni romane contro Cartagine e…; il senatore fu interrotto subito dallo stesso Regolo: distruggerete Cartagine, certamente, ma non con la mia guida; il re di Cartagine mi ha offerto la possibilità di salvare la mia vita se io convincerò voi, senatori, a stipulare la pace con Cartagine, se riuscirò a fare questo avrò salva la vita, altrimenti dovrò tornare a Cartagine e lì essere ucciso; i senatori, almeno coloro che ritenevano la pace l’unico strumento necessario per Roma, furono rinfrancati e pensarono che con l’aiuto di Regolo la pace sarebbe stata stipulata, ma Regolo aggiunse: ma voi, senatori, declinerete questa proposta, affronterete Cartagine e la distruggerete perché io, Attilio Regolo, vi ingiungo di continuare nella guerra con Cartagine e di distruggerla; un senatore si alzò e raggiunto il centro dell’aula, dove era Regolo, si rivolse ai senatori e parlando idealmente sia all’uditorio che a Regolo stesso disse: Quindi Regolo tu non salvi la tua vita ma chiedi che Roma distrugga Cartagine anche se questo comporterà la tua stessa morte; perdonami Regolo, ma un generale come te è assai più utile qui a Roma piuttosto che a Cartagine morto, non credi Regolo? La tua scorta è composta da dieci uomini, noi possiamo decimarla in breve tempo e tu saresti libero, quindi perché incontrare la morte se puoi vivere? Tu che hai vinto nel Salento, che sei stato console nel 267, tu che hai conquistato Brindisi e metà della Puglia, e Taranto, tu che hai vinto a Punta di Licata tu che hai sconfitto già pesantemente Cartagine potrai sconfiggerla ancora con noi e le truppe che tu guiderai. Regolo guardò il senatore poi la platea e rispose: Io ho giurato il mio ritorno a Cartagine non come soldato, non come uomo, non come console, ma solo come romano, e quindi devo obbedire allo spirito romano, alla forza romana, alla disciplina romana perché sono romano, e non posso essere dimentico di tale fierezza solo per salvare la mia vita, voi distruggerete Cartagine anche per il mio esempio, Regolo sarà quindi con voi e con le schiere romane, ma ora io non posso tradire il giuramento compiuto, perché è un giuramento romano e come romano devo rispettarlo sempre, quindi morirò da romano; data la decisione di Regolo l’intero Senato decise che sarebbero stati celebrati i giochi funebri per Regolo, e che in suo nome Cartagine sarebbe stata distrutta. Regolo quindi uscì dal Senato a raggiunse la sponda tiberina a cui era attraccata la barca che lo ricondusse alla nave diretta a Cartagine; Regolo morì da romano dopo una vita condotta da romano.

Death of a Roman

At the Roman Senate situation was uncertain, who talked with life voice so that Rome make peace with Carthage who, contrary, want finish of war and destruction of Carthage who, contrary, stall for to hide uncertain showing prudence; but for a moment everybody be silent and listened the worlds of a soldier who go in Senate who asked attention for his worlds; “Senator, fathers of Rome, Marco Attilio Regolo is turned from Carthage, now has be seen on the Tiberina island and he is going here, then we listen him”; soldier hasn’t time for to finish his tell that senators get up all from stall and given greet to an armed soldier with then armed escort, and he with a move of hand ordered stop; soldier was at centre of room and take out helmet he lay on the stall, he seen around and scan eyes of every single senator, eyes firm and resolute, after extracted the sword and he give Roman greet to senator and he talked; “Glory you Senate of Rome”; then sheathe sword and waited that Senators talked to him; one senator aske form stall higher: “Regolo we just talked for honours which we must give you for your death, then we great pleasure we see you and we can save you, your escort is very small, we can free you, and you will can lead Roman legions against Carthage and…; senator was interrupted by same Regolo, who talked: “You destroy Carthage, certainly, but not with my leader; the king of Carthage offered me possibility for to save my life if I will persuade you to make peace with Carthage, if I get it I will be saved, otherwise I must go Carthage and there die; senators, at last who was agreed with peace, was reinforced and, and they though that with help of Regolo peace will make soon, but Regolo joins: “You will decline this propose, you will confront Carthage and you destroy it because I, Marco Attilio Regolo, order you continue with war; a senator then raised and to centre of room, where was Regolo he talked: “Then Regolo you not save your life but ask that Rome destroy Carthage although this action will determine your death; excuse me Regolo but a consul as you is very utile life here instead die to Carthage, do you not think Regolo? Your escort are then men, we can killed and you will be free, the why meet death if you can live? You have won in Salento, you are consul at 267, you have conquered Brindisi and half Puglia, and Taranto, you have win to Punta di Licata,      you have just won hardly Carthage, you will can win still, with us and our army”. Regolo seen senator and the public and answered: “I have swore that I go back to Carthage not as soldier, as man, as consul, but alone as Roman, and then I must obey to Roman spirit, to Roman force, to Roman discipline, because I am Roman, and I can’t forgotten this pride only for my life; then you destroy Carthage and for my exemple, Regolo will be with you and with Roman army, but now I can’t betray my swear, because it is Roman swear, and as Roman I must respect it, then I will die as Roman”; for this decision of Regolo all Senate decide that will be celebrate plays for honour of Regolo and Carthage will be destroy. Regolo go out Senate and come forward river Tevere, where he took the navy for Carthage; Regolo died as Roman after a life pass as Roman.
