An old man walked for an ancient place, where were sculpture and temples, where were also other men who talked among they, and were also merchants and few stores,  soldiers and women who looked exhibited goods; all was tranquil and calm, sometime few cry of a merchant but noting that should can score, usually publicity of vendor. The old man approached at man and listened what he was saying; he was engaged in a discussion with a young and he tried explication of a philosophical concept around deity, and he explicated that man must believe to gods because they guaranteed live to men and victory easily for fight; therefore old man approached more to philosopher and asked: “Yes! You have right, in fact much fight are beaten by Athene because we have called gods, and for history of Athene much fight are beat for this call; but I believe that also enemy of Athene have call gods; then why they have lost and we not? I believe that gods called for victory should are same, Mars for fight and other for issues other; we have wined and other lost, why?”; philosopher then seen old man and touched his bard and seeing down answered; “Because we are favoured by gods, and other not, simple”; and when terminated answer he smile for his answer that was logic; old man then seen philosopher and commented: “But sometime we have lost the fight, therefore why we are favoured we have lost too?”; philosopher seen with contempt old man and turned head he went with disregard; old man stood there and continued to see philosopher who was went  way, then old man seen other man who was present to discussion, and an young asked: “Do you are a wise, very wise”; therefore old man answered: “ No, thank you, I am alone who knows that doesn’t to know, and I am very happy because I am so, but you are so young, you have wise expression and certainly you are very wise, then you can teach me something, why you don’t teach me?”; young looked old man and answered: “I don’t know noting and I can’t teach you, because I don’t know”; old man then answered: “Then you are very wise, because you something know, you know that you don’t to know, then you aren’t ignorant, because one thing you know. This is start, now you must increase your knowledge, and you must get over this ignorance; but say me if you know that you don’t to know then tell me how I can to know, according to your opinion how I can to know?”; young looked old man and answered: “I think that you must read and you must listen wises, who teach and explains, I think”; old man asked: “And who explains is very wise, because knows”; young nods; “then why you have explained me how I can become wise, you say on yourself that you aren’t wise, you have explained me and therefore you are wise”; young looked old man with same contempt and also he went way, old man then turned head and tried to ask other present, but nobody answered. A woman was there and involuntary had listen all and she approached to old man and said: “You are very wise, because you know that you don’t to know, and you are very wise”; old man looked in the eyes woman and asked; “Who are you?”; woman looked at other town of place and answered; “Pizia”. And now was old man turned head and went way.

Un uomo anziano camminava per una piazza antica dove erano sculture e templi, dove era anche altri uomini che parlavano fra loro, erano anche mercanti e qualche negozio, soldati e donne che guardavano la merce esposta, tutto era tranquillo e calmo, talvolta qualcuno gridava ma nulla che potesse spaventare, solita pubblicità del venditore. L’uomo anziano si avvicinò per ascoltare un uomo che stava parlando e spiegando; era impegnato in una discussione con un giovane e tentava di spiegare un concetto filosofico intorno alla divinità, e diceva che l’uomo deve credere  agli dei perché loro garantiscono  la vita all’uomo e la facile vittoria nelle battaglie; quindi l’uomo anziano si avvicinò e chiese: “Si tu hai ragione, infatti  Atene ha vinto molte battaglie perché ha creduto negli dei, e durante la storia di Atene molte battaglie sono state vinte per questo; ma io credo che anche il nemico di Atene abbia invocato gli dei; allora perché loro hanno perso le battaglie e noi no? Credo che gli dei invocati fossero i medesimi, Marte per le battaglie e altri per altre funzioni, perché allora?”; il filosofo guardò fissamente negli occhi l’anziano e toccandosi la barba guardò a terra, e rispose; “Perché noi siamo favoriti dagli dei, ed altri no, semplice”; e quando terminò accennò un sorriso per la sua risposta che era logica; l’uomo allora guardò il filosofo e commentò; “Ma qualche volta anche Atene ha perso le battaglie, quindi perché se noi siamo i favoriti?”; il filosofo guardò con disprezzo  l’uomo anziano e girò la testa e andò via; l’uomo anziano restò lì e continuò a guardare il filosofo che era lontano, e chiese ad un altro uomo lì presente, ed un giovane disse: “Tu sei sapiente, davvero sapiente”; quindi l’uomo anziano  rispose: “No grazie, io sono solo uno che sa di non sapere, e sono davvero felice perché io sono così, ma tu che sei così giovane, e che hai un’espressione davvero sapiente, tu puoi insegnare a me qualche cosa, perché non insegni a me?”; il giovane guardò l’uomo e rispose: “Io non conosco nulla e non so, e io non posso insegnare perché non so; il vecchio allora rispose; “Tu sei davvero sapiente, perché tu qualcosa conosci, tu sai di non sapere, quindi tu non sei ignorante, perché una cosa la sai. Questo è un inizio, ora tu devi incrementare le tue conoscenze e superare questa ignoranza; ma dimmi se tu sai di non sapere raccontami come io posso conoscere, secondo la tua opinione?”; il giovane guardò l’uomo e rispose: “Leggendo ed ascoltando i sapienti che insegnano ed esplicano”; l’uomo allora chiese: “E chi esplica è davvero sapiente perché conosce”; il giovani quindi annuì; “Quindi tu hai esplicato a me come diventare sapiente, tu dici su te stesso di non essere sapiente”; il giovane  guardò l’uomo con disprezzo e andò via, l’uomo girò la testa  e tentò di chiedere ai presenti, ma nessuno rispose. Una donna che aveva involontariamente ascoltato si avvicinò all’uomo e disse: “Tu sei davvero sapiente, perché tu sai di non sapere”; l’uomo guardò la donna e chiese: “Chi sei tu?, la donna rispose: “Pizia”. L’uomo allora girò la testa e andò via.
